Excerpt:

I gasp, feeling the band tighten around my chest as the nightmare leaves me in its wake. Fuck, it’s still happening. A small part of me had hoped that with my life finally becoming normal that the dreams would go away. But you know what they say about hope being a fickle bitch and all that . . .

My body is covered in a sheen of sweat, my head is pounding with the drums of the old Salvation Army band, and my stomach is roiling. I jump up and run to the bathroom, dropping down to my knees just in time to lose my very expensive celebratory dinner and champagne.

My body stiffens when I feel a hand brush my hair back from my face.

“Too much champagne?” he asks with a note of humor in his voice. The miserable bastard would just love for me to be hungover.

“Yeah,” I whisper.

“Claire?” he asks. I hate the worry in his voice. I hate that I put it there. I thought I had escaped—that I was finally free—but I’m not free, I’ll never be free. I’ve brought Wes straight into hell with me and I hate that most of all.

“Just let it go, Wes.” My voice is rough in desperation, for him to leave it alone, to leave me to my own devices, I don’t know which.

“No,” he grounds out his voice firm. I hang my head unwilling to look at him yet. I can’t stand that this is how he sees me, at my lowest, covered in sweat with the scent of vomit in the air.

“Wes—” I begin to plead but he stops me before I can even get the words out.

“No!” he shouts. “No, I won’t let it go and no, I won’t go away. I want in there, Claire. You have to let me in, baby.” He’s pleading, and I can’t stand the desperation in his voice or the knowledge that I am solely responsible for it.

“It’s too dark, Wes,” I whisper. “I can’t drag you further into hell with me.”

Wes drops down onto his knees behind me, wrapping his arms around me as if he can block the world from seeping on to my shoulders. In this moment, Wes is my shield, my protector, my big, bad warrior and I know in my heart that with him I can do anything, be anything, but without him, I don’t even want to try.

“I’ve already been to hell, honey,” he says softly, his chin resting on my shoulder, reminding me that he has been to hell and knows its demons on a first name basis. “Let me walk in there with you. Let me be your light in the dark.”

“It’s not that easy.”

“But what if it is?” He asks softly. “What if together we can beat it back?”

“I just don’t know,” I say softly, my voice harsh. “I’m so scared.”

“I know, baby.” His arms grip tighter around me, easing the invisible band around my chest. “Let me be your light.”

“You already are.”

And in this moment, I realize the veracity of my words. The power they hold rings true for both of us. No longer have I craved the bite of my own bullet and while I struggle with the nightmares, the trauma that still lives inside me, twisting me up, I no longer feel alone, because I’m not. Maybe, just maybe, we can beat back the darkness, together. Wes is right, it’s time to let him in. If we’re really lucky, I won’t drag him into hell with me, but he might just be able to help me pull myself out once and for all.

“Then let’s go back to bed,” he whispers.

“Okay.”

The Roots Of Us By Candace Knoebel Blog Tour: Excerpt Reveal

We are so excited to be bringing out the release of THE ROOTS OF US by Candace Knoebel. Fans of contemporary romance won’t want to miss this new emotional story. Be sure to grab your copy today!

About THE ROOTS OF US

The first time I saw Hudson Jameson, he was saving someone’s life.
The second time, he was ruining mine.

It was only supposed to be a vacation. A chance to let the Florida sun burn away the residue left behind from my failed relationships. I wasn’t searching for love. I was on a hiatus from men, especially ones with secrets.

Except Hudson had the gaze of a man drowning in his own miseries, and I was a sucker for the damaged souls. How could I deny him? How could I resist when his lips claimed mine?

I knew I couldn’t stay.
He told me he couldn’t bear to leave.

But some roots intertwine and refuse to let go, no matter how far you run.

Read an excerpt from THE ROOTS OF US

Heightened voices rose from somewhere in the kitchen. I lifted my head when I heard a low, guttural growl. Assuming it was Hudson, I closed my laptop, curiosity picking at me once again. If there was a chance I could discover why Hudson had such a cloud hanging over his head, I had to take it.

I stood. Tip-toed forward, trying to peer through the serving window without being noticed.

“She won’t bite,” I heard the elderly woman say. “She’s just a woman, and it would do you some good to have no choice but to talk to someone. Especially someone of the opposite sex.”

She was giving him a run for his money. I already liked her.

“Martha—” Hudson said, his voice dipped in octaves that suggested she was nearing his limit for the day.

“Don’t Martha me,” she bit back at him. A lioness swatting at her cub. I inched forward, stopping just in front of the door as I tried to peek past the window to get a good look at the woman who reminded me so much of my Nona. “It’s been nearly a year since you rid yourself of that awful woman. It’s time for you to dip your feet back into the pool. You’re too young and good looking to be single. Now, get out there before she leaves.”

This was the part where my curiosity bit me in the ass. Or rather, shoved me on my ass.

With one, hard push, Hudson came barreling through the double doors, only, I was in the way. Trying to rush back to my table, I turned when the door caught the back of me.

Down I went.

I landed on my side, catching myself with my elbow as Hudson cursed behind me. When I turned, he was rubbing his forehead. I noted the bright red horizontal line across his forehead and the glaring look he threw over his shoulder, and put together that his forehead had collided with the frame due to his height. He grimaced when he noticed Martha shooing him forward with a brisk wave of her hands.

I was about to get to my feet when he turned back around and saw me on the ground. For a moment, he stood stone-still, eyebrows pressed together in a menacing furrow.

“I have a talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.” I laughed, but the sound was offbeat and kind of delirious as embarrassment painted my skin in bright shades of red.

“How did you—are you all right?” he asked as he offered a hand to help me up while holding a basket of bread. Gone was his rough demeanor, replaced by concern. Rocky and rough, yet serene and calm… Hudson. I liked the softness his features took when his guard was down. The round shape of worry circling the golden rings around his pupils.

I took his hand. Rough and marred with calluses. But that wasn’t what I noticed first. What I noticed first was how my skin seemed to ignite, like a tripwire set off, the sparks traveling through my veins until they filled my heart, bursting like fireworks.

I retracted. Insta-love wasn’t my thing.

“Yeah,” I managed as I brushed my hands against my shorts. I knew I shouldn’t have listened to that heady beating of my heart, but I had a weakness for men with rough edges and soft eyes and he was charging past the barricade I’d placed. I marked the acute details of his face. The faint lines in the corners of his eyes, probably from squinting in the sun too much.

And then there were those baby blues. Something familiar and slightly terrifying swimming inside them, sort of like staring at a white water rapid, wanting to dive in but knowing you’d be swept under in a heartbeat.

Nona had always said a man would come into my life one day and replace everything I thought I knew about love. He’d erase the hurt left behind from my dad. Teach me that not all men are monsters, and take every romantic cliché and multiply them by a thousand. The palms sweating, knees weak, skin tingling kind of clichés you read about.

I never believed her. Not until that moment.

Read an excerpt from UNTIL THERE WAS US

Alex was drinking coffee and looking out at his backyard. He loved his home, his property. Living in the suburbs was something he had always wanted to do, and when he found this house, it had everything he needed—lots of green space and room for him to put in the pool he now had and the kind of landscaping that ensured his privacy. He wasn’t antisocial or trying to avoid his neighbors, but he had thought if he was able to work with clients out of the house, they’d appreciate the privacy.

With June almost here, the weather was starting to turn warm, and he’d opened up the pool the previous weekend. The water level was perfect, and so were the chemical levels. The pool was heated, and maybe in another week or two, he’d be able to start using it.

Off his back porch was a hot tub, and for now that worked fine.

He was considering changing and doing a little soaking when his phone rang. When he saw Megan’s name on the screen, he was pleasantly surprised.

“Hey,” he said when he answered and hoped his enthusiasm wasn’t too obvious.

“Oh my God, Alex,” she began breathlessly. “I’ve lost Maylene!”

“Um…what?” She immediately relayed what had gone on, and she was getting to the point of near hysteria. “It’s going to be all right.”

“You don’t understand, Alex! I had one job to do— one stupid job!—and I screwed it up. I have to find her, and I have no idea where to look!”

He was already grabbing his keys and locking up the house. “I’m on my way. I’ll be there in ten minutes, and I’ll be on the lookout for her as I drive over.”

“What do I do? Where do I even begin to look for her?” she cried.

“Go and grab her leash and start walking up one side of the block and then down the other. I’ll be there as soon as I can. I promise.”

He heard the shaky breath she let out. “I have to find her, Alex,” she said quietly. “I can’t believe I lost her.”

“You haven’t lost her, Megan. She’s a handful— Ethan talks about that all the time. She’s gotten out before, so we will find her. Trust me.”

“I…I don’t know…I’m not sure where to even start…”

At that moment, he hated how he wasn’t there already with her. He could hear the devastation in her voice and knew she was going to have a serious meltdown any minute. “Megan,” he said, his voice going firm and authoritative, “you need to do what I’m telling you. Get Maylene’s leash, and then start walking down the block to the right of the house. I have a feeling that’s the direction she’d go in first. Start there, and I’ll be there as fast as I can.”

That seemed to work because by the time she hung up, she sounded a little more in control of her emotions. Back when they had dated—and he used the term loosely—he had never seen Megan get emotional. She got frustrated, sure. But never emotional—never to the point of tears. And he wasn’t sure how to react to it. His initial response was…well…it made him like her a little more. It softened her and showed how she wasn’t as cold as she’d seemed when they had ended things.

That memory instantly got pushed aside because now was not the time to be focusing on it. The important thing right now was to get to her and help her find Maylene.

Luckily, traffic was on his side, and he didn’t hit any red lights and turned onto Summer’s block six minutes later. Alex immediately spotted Megan and pulled over, rolling down his window. “Megan! Hop in! We’ll hit the other side of the street now.”

Nodding, she quickly jogged over and climbed into the truck. It was pointless to ask if she’d had any luck— the simple fact that there wasn’t a dog on the end of the leash told him she hadn’t. He pulled over close to the right side of the road and drove slowly. They each called out to the dog as they went. After two blocks, Megan rested her head on the back of the seat and sighed loudly. He pulled over.

“It’s no use,” she said miserably. “She’s gone. She’s just…she’s gone! I’m going to have to break it to Summer that I lost her dog!” She looked over at him, her brown eyes brimming with tears. “She loves that dog! Do you have any idea how much this is going to kill her?”

Unfortunately, Alex did know how much Summer loved her dog, and no doubt this was going to be devastating for her. Reaching over, he took one of Megan’s hands in his and gently squeezed it. “We’re not giving up, okay? We’ll keep driving around. We’ll knock on doors. We’ll put up posters and post on social media if we have to. I’ll drive around all night if that’s what it takes. All is not lost here, okay?”

The hesitant look on her face told him she didn’t think it would do any good, but he refused to quit. Not after only two blocks! With her hand in his, he started driving and was relieved when she turned and called out to Maylene again.

They drove for several more blocks and then turned around and made their way up the other side. By the time they were back in front of Summer’s, Alex decided to pull into the driveway and park. “We’ll knock on doors now,” he said.

“Maybe we need to go off the block,” she suggested.

It was possible, he thought, but he had a feeling if they were on foot, they’d have more luck. “Why don’t you go and grab a handful of her treats? This way if we spot her and she thinks we’re playing, we can lure her over with a snack. What do you think?”

“Sounds good.” Megan took off up the driveway, and Alex watched her disappear around the back of the house and into the yard. A minute later, she called his name, and he quickly jogged back to her. At the gate, he spotted her pointing to the far corner of the deck. When he stepped closer, he started to chuckle. “Don’t you dare laugh.”

He knew she was trying to sound intimidating, but there was a hint of laughter in her own voice.

There, sitting in the corner of the deck in Ethan’s hammock, was Maylene—peacefully sunning herself. Alex glanced at the dog and then to Megan. “Um…”

“She was not there earlier. I swear.”

“Okay.”

“I’m serious, Alex! She didn’t come when I called her, and she wasn’t there when I brought the mail in and put it inside either of the houses. I heard her barking when I came out of the main house, but by the time I came out of mine, she was gone!”

“I believe you,” he said carefully and took a step closer to her. “I’m sure she was just playing with you.”

She shot him a bland look. “Seriously? That’s what you’re going with?”

He laughed a bit, unable to help himself. “I’m not sure what else I can say. The thing we should be focused on here is that she’s not lost. She’s home and in the yard, and even though I happen to know for a fact that Ethan doesn’t like her sitting in the hammock, it’s better than the alternative.”

Waiting On Wednesday: Save the Date

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine to show upcoming releases that we can’t wait to read (aka going crazy waiting for). This weeks book is:
Save the Date

Save the Date by Morgan Matson

Hardcover, 432 pages
Expected publication: June 5th 2018 by Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers

Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait—for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster—all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.

The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster.

There’s the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won’t stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.

There are the relatives who aren’t speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo.

Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner’s nephew is unexpectedly, distractingly…cute.

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she’ll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.

My Feels: This sounds like such a fun read! I can just picture this as a wonderful rom-com movie. Definitely going to have to pick this one up!
What are you “waiting on”?

“Anyway,” Gabriella went on, “we never found out why they had so many questions or were so curious about the whole thing, but they spent a lot of time talking to Alex.” She paused. “Come to think of it, we never asked him what it was all about.”

“You can ask him tonight,” Zach said. “He should be here any minute.”

And just like that, Megan started choking again. This time Ethan came over and patted her on the back until she caught her breath.

He carefully moved her glass away. “Maybe wait a while before you try that again,” he teased. Everyone laughed, and Megan did her best to join in, but inside she felt like she was going to be sick.

“I’m good,” she said after a moment.

“You didn’t mention Alex was coming,” Gabriella said as she began putting a salad together.

“I asked him if he could come help us paint this weekend, and he said yes and even volunteered to help out tonight.”

“Well, that was nice of him,” Summer said, placing Amber on her shoulder and rubbing her back.

“He’s bringing beer and dessert,” Zach said with a grin. Then he looked at Ethan. “And I thought we could shoot some hoops before dinner since the rest of the night will be a snooze fest of unscrewing switch plates and taping trim.”

“Yes!” Ethan said with relief. “I was hoping there was going to be something else to do!”

“Hey, you volunteered,” Zach reminded him.

“I know, but that’s because I’m a nice guy and a good friend. Doesn’t mean I wasn’t going to be bored out of my mind,” he clarified.

“Megan, did you meet Alex at our wedding?” Gabriella asked.

Immediately, she felt her cheeks warm and knew she was minutes away from a panic attack. “Um…I don’t think so,” she said and then quickly excused herself. It wasn’t until she was in the bathroom that she finally allowed herself to breathe. She’d known she was going to see Alex eventually; she just wasn’t expecting it to be quite so soon. Looking down at herself, she groaned. Sure, he couldn’t come over after she’d gone shopping?

It was impossible to do anything about what she was wearing, and as she glanced at her reflection in the mirror, she cursed the fact that she hadn’t even had the good sense to bring a little lip gloss or anything with her. Closing her eyes, she silently counted to ten and forced herself to leave the bathroom.

The doorbell rang as she was walking by the front door, so when Zach asked her to get it, how could she say no? Letting out a slow breath, Megan reached a shaky hand toward the door and pulled it open.

And basically forgot how to breathe.

Yeah, he was everything she remembered and so much more—sandy-brown hair, tall, lean build, and muscles that made her want to reach out and touch them.

Or lick them. Whatever.

He was wearing dark sunglasses, so she had no idea if he was as surprised to see her as she was to see him, but he smiled as he softly said, “Hey, Megan.”

And just like that she was practically a puddle on the floor.

“Hey,” she said and wanted to curse how breathless she sounded. Stepping aside, she motioned for him to come in.

“Thanks.”

Her cheeks heated, and she couldn’t make herself look directly at him. “Everyone’s in the kitchen.” And when she walked past him, she could almost feel him. Swallowing hard, she led the way to where everyone was and quickly took her seat. Then she took a moment to congratulate herself on not acting like an idiot in front of him.

Today we have the blog tour for UNDER A STORM-SWEPT SKY by Beth Anne Miller! We are so excited to share this new title with you! Check it out and grab your copy today!

Title: UNDER A STORM SWEPT SKY

Author: Beth Anne Miller

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Under a Storm-Swept Sky:

An eighty-mile trek across the rugged, stunning beauty of Scotland’s Isle of Skye isn’t something I imagined myself doing. Ever. This isn’t a trail for beginners. And I’m not a hiker.
But I have to finish it, even if it kills me. I have no choice.
With the ever-changing weather and relentless terrain, I’m in over my head.

Rory Sutherland, my guide on this adventure, is not happy. We clash with every mile, but we recognize a shared pain. Not only is the journey a struggle, but the tension between us is taut with unsaid words. And hope.

He’s broken. I’m damaged. Together, we’re about to make the perfect storm.

 My Review:

There is something about a book that really sucks you in when from the first chapter you’re already intrigued. This is one of those. When Amelia and Rory meet, there is immediate tension and the arguments begin. From the beginning of this book I knew it was going to be a good time and i was going to love it. The two of them were so consumed in their heads with all of their broken pieces that they couldn’t see past demons. Amelia realizes she has no option but to depend on Rory to get through the hike and the last thing they expected was tension to shift.

People always say opposites attract but sometimes your own struggles and life obstacles can bring two people together and create something beautiful. This is exactly what happened with Amelia and Rory. Getting to watch their story play out will make your heart soar. Trust me when I tell you this is a must read.
