Guest Book Review: The Ocean Between Us *Spoilers*

Today I decided to mix things up a bit. I rarely get to geek out over books with anyone but for once I got to tear this book apart with one of my friends. I asked her to give me a short review to post since we had such different thoughts and feelings on this book.
The Ocean Between Us

The Ocean Between Us by Delisa Lynn
Benton Creek Series Book 1
Published March 15th 2016

Masters Sweet Baked Goods—the best bakery in Benton Creek.

Run by Hendlee Masters and her grandmother, Masters Sweets is the heart and soul of what’s left of Hendlee’s family. Raised by her grandmother after her parents died when she was only five, Hendlee’s poured her time and energy into building her own life in the small town she loves.
Best friends are hard to find—and even harder to keep.
Hendlee didn’t start to notice her feelings for one of her friends—Quaid Castings—until she was in high school. By then it was too late. Unlike her, his plans for the future involved ditching town and enrolling in the Naval Academy.

Just one night with Quaid is all she wants, but when it finally happens, it’s not nearly enough. And he’s leaving in less than twenty-four hours.
The pursuit of happiness often requires leaving someone behind.
Quaid wants more than the country life. Joining the Navy is the best way to explore the world beyond the hills of Kentucky. Except chasing his dream means leaving behind the girl he’s been in love with all his life—Hendlee Masters.

When Quaid chooses a career in the Navy over the love of a small-town girl, will their fates once again align? Or will their love be lost in The Oceans Between Us?

My Review:
Boy, oh boy, where to start. I have to be honest. I didn’t love it. I had to walk away a few times because I wanted to jump through the pages and smack Hendlee. This book had so much potential but it just didn’t work out for me.
Hendlee has been in love with her best friend since they were ity-bity. Hendlee has experienced more loss than most people do in a lifetime. When Quaid is about to leave for the Navy, Hendlee just about looses her shiz trying to convince him to stay but he needs to go for him. Before he leaves they finally pour out all their obsessive feelings. After basic training an old friend, Jason decides its his time to finally take the girl he wants. Quaid receives a call and letter saying Jason is dating Hendlee and she is pregnant. He of course is completely crushed and signs a 6 year contract and cuts Hendlee out of his life. Little does he know, Hendlee is actually pregnant with his baby. 5 years later Quaid returns to Benton Creek for a friends funeral. He along with Hendlee now have to face each other and their demons which results in an explosion of drama.
Hendlee was so obsessed with Quaid and desperate that I feel like she needed to be medicated. I completely understand being in love and never loosing hope for that one person especially the father of your child but man this was so cheesy. This book had so much drama which I normally wouldn’t complain about but every time a situation escalated it would be over without a resolution by the next chapter and never heard of again.
Even though I am not making a great case for this book, I will say that their best friends were my absolute favorite characters. I will definitely read book 2 just so I can see what happens between them.
Review by Catelynn :
Ocean between us was a great story. I love the love story I just hated those extra details, because it feels like she forgot about them then was like oh shit here’s how that ended. Some of the parts didn’t make sense, for example how Jason randomly gave up on trying to get back Hendlee and her daughter after obsessing over them, and I thought it was kind of weird how both times quiad went away Hendlee got pregnant. I thought it was very stupid that Quaid didn’t read Hendlee’s letters but he read Jason’s. I think 5 years was too long for them to be apart it should have been shorter than that, I didn’t like Nicola’s character because she was there then she left then she has pizza with him then you never hear from her again.
